Common Backache
The precise cause is unknown in three quarters of cases.
Often the pain is localised in the lower part of the
back, although about 25% of people have pain going down
the legs. 60% recover within two weeks.
Treatment
Simple treatment is usually enough, eg rest (on a firm
surface) for as short a period as possible, painkillers,
heat or cold packs. Manipulation by a trained person
may help, but often only gives short-term relief. X-rays
are unlikely to show any abnormality in the vast majority
of people.
Prevention is better than cure! Correct body weight
and fitness are important. Sports can strengthen the
back (eg swimming - crawl and breaststroke). Special
exercises may help (from books or physiotherapists).
It may be necessary to change lifestyle.
Contact the doctor if pain is severe, there is numbness
or weakness of the legs, pain is present for more than
two weeks, there are problems with bladder control or
other symptoms cause concern.
